Mesh Mashup: Selection and Refinement

Selection and Refinement

From The Feedback

After talking with some of my fellow classmates, a few of my creations stood out to them, the 3 most popular being “Autumn”, “Break-fast”, and “Fishlight”. The one I decided to pick and further refine was the jellyfish lamp titled “Fishlight”. Initially, I didn’t find this particular mockup much interest compared to the others I had created until the idea of transparency in materials and thinking about light sources was brought up. This made me reconsider this mockup as I found this would be much more interesting with these ideas implemented and piqued my curiosity. Before I was more drawn to my “Break-fast” concept and was also recommended that I think about playing with light sources for its final render and considering the idea of the crystals glowing and also being transparent, however, I chose “Fishlight” over “Break-fast” due to enjoying the composition of “Fishlight” more and felt that it was more dynamic with the inclusion of the smaller fish around the lamp. Overall, this was the most liked mockup I created as well, receiving the most intrigue from other classmates I spoke to want to see where it could go and after hearing that feedback, I saw the greatest amount of potential in this concept to move forward with.

My Object and Remix Culture

For my object, I chose a lamp model, a jellyfish model, and some smaller fish models to complement the main remixed jellyfish lamp. The idea that came to mind when putting these models together is that the shape of the jellyfish matches the shape of the lamp dish. I also thought about how jellyfish tend to look like they are glowing when you see them in aquariums and so putting these two ideas together, the jellyfish has a new purpose, being the light at the bottom of the ocean. Taking the manmade lamp object and putting it into context with the natural untouched jellyfish animal gives a new context of seeing the jellyfish as an object rather than a creature. Its purpose changes in relation to the lamp as its only expectation are to light up the bottom of the ocean where the lamp sunk down to. After adding the fish around the lamp, this concept for the environment and story began to emerge and really created a whole new idea when these objects were remixed into their own work of art. The idea of taking previous works and altering them into something completely different conceptually and visually really allowed for new ideas to be initiated and explored.

Object Refinement

Here is my mashup refined in Meshmixer. My goal was to make the jellyfish look more organic and flowy, clean up the lamp and add a bit more variation to the fish.
