After testing out shapes for my Animal Crossing water can object design, I began to notice potential issues I would face if I continued with this object such as weight displacement issues and considering how I would attach the eyes to the side. I felt that at that moment, I didn’t have enough experience to go forward yet with this particular design and opted to go back to the drawing board and pick a new object.
I decided to pick a different object from a different game. I chose the main character’s (Stella) hat from Spiritfarer. I picked this due to the interesting shape that the hat had and thought it would work well for this project as well as the game being one that I recently completed and love. I felt that that design would be more obtainable for me to start with and learn from.
Reflection:
After making the prototype, I found some things I needed to change/consider for the final project.
I would need to assemble the hat in a different order to allow for a cleaner outside for the top of the hat. I would have to start with the tip of the hat and work down rather than how I did it the first time where I started with the base and worked up.
I would have to put in the hat liner last to allow for an opening into the hat to help with gluing.
On the hat liner, I need to add in tabs. These will help make the liner look more solid and flush with the rest of the design.
The hole on the bottom doesn’t line up with the papers that lay on the bottom of the hat. Those will need to be adjusted to line up.
Depending on how the gluing goes, I may not need the inside support tabs as I may glue the triangles to the base from the outside. The flat paper designs will cover it anyways so it is something to consider when assembling.
If possible, printing on a bigger paper (scaling everything up) would help with making smaller folds easier to bend and glue. This isn’t a must but would be a quality of life improvement.
